The Five And A Half Year Project
How strong can our structures be and how much punishment can they withstand. How far can we go in life? How much can we learn? How much information can our heads hold? A human is made of two systems, the mind and the body and for the next five and a half years I intent to push them both to their limits. I intend to post weekly updates and status pictures. This experiment will begin July 1st 2011 and end on Feb 17, 2017 , my 40th birthday. Wish me luck!

Week 4
Day 17
July 17, 2011
Two waves of house guests have not left me with much time this week for the project, but I did get in some runs. Ran 4 miles again today. Did my stretching and then my weights.
Day 18
July 18, 2011
Ran only two miles today. My right calf has been sore. No time for weights.
Day 19
July 19, 2011
Ran only two miles today. No time for weights.
Day 20
July 20, 2011
This is getting monotonous. Ran two miles. No time for weights. Right calf is really getting sore.
Day 21
July 21, 2011
Rest day, No run, no weights.
Day 22
July 22, 2011
Rest day, No run, no weights.
Day 23
July 23, 2011
Ran Three miles today. Legs felt better with a couple of days rest on them. I wanted to do four miles but at about two and a half miles, the heat started getting to me. I was running at about 3:oo in the afternoon and the 100 degree heat felt like 110 running on the asphalt. I walked in a circle a few times till I cooled down a little and then picked up the run right where I left off. Back at the gym the heat persisted I got through a couple of combo lifts and decided to quit for the day.
Day 24
July 24, 2011
Ran four miles today. Stretched back at the gym and hit the combos hard. Worked my back and chest and had no energy left.
Word of the day: Mete, which means to deal out or allot. As in: Our current system of government is not very good at meting out our public entitlements.
Random question: Marilyn Monroe or Betty Page?
Ooooouuuu! Tough one! Hum, on one hand you have Ms. Monroe who set the standard for and absolutely epitomized sexual femininity for generations and on the other hand you have Page who illuminated and mainstreamed most of the world of sex we know today. It would be a toss up except for the idea that Monroe seems to have put more of her 'off set' personality into her work and personality goes a long way with me. So I say Monroe, but given the chance I would take either one to the prom.

Week 3
Week 3
Day 11
July 11, 2011
I am hurting right now!!! Up at 7:00 am. No math, Zoie had an Oral exam with the state teacher today and I try not to be present so she's own her own. She did well, by the way, and her math teacher has nothing but good things to say about her. Huge turn around since last year at the public school... I cannot say enough great things about the home schooling stuff. I wish I could say this is the future but it does require a lot of work on the parents end and I don't see the majority of parents taking up the slack there.
Work was ok. Nothing horrible happened.
Stopped to get some gas and a couple of drinks for the wifey and I on the way home. Got home and started my workout. Here's where it gets good! I did my 2 mile warm up run. Did some stretching and went right into my weights. Started with combos, on to isos. But about half way through my iso lifts my arms and back started getting shaky. I was pushing right to the edge! I have been here before and pushed through it, right into injury. Tonight I recognized it and stopped! Now I am sitting here typing and every move hurts but feels so good at the same time! Once again I pushed right to the edge and then stepped back... Awesome! This is extremely motivational to me. I can't wait till I can do the same thing with my mind. And now for something completely different.
Random question of the day: Are you a hero or a villain?
Let me preface this answer by saying that I think most people who are asked this question desire to be both. Not me. I don't desire to be either. I am intelligent enough to understand the world is made of average people making the best decisions they know how. One person's hero is another's villain and vice-versa. One man's paradise is another's hell. One man's good deed is another's evil, etc. Why would I even want to be one or the other or both? Humans always seem to need a comparison to place themselves in there own minds. For example, If you feel hot it is because the environment around you is cooler than you are. If you are fast it is because others are slower than you. If you want to feel good about yourself you identify people around you who you think are bad. If you want to feel bad then you find some good people and you shock them with bad behavior. How unproductive and silly. Progress is not good or bad, righteous or evil. It's just productive. In short, screw emotion. Just do what you have to do.
New daily segment! We have a temp working for us now and she cleaned out one of our offices today. Coming by to check the scene, I noticed an old and busted paper back dictionary in the trash. I picked it out and said thought what a great addition to the project. So here is the plan. Every day I will randomly open to a page and pick the first word I don't recognize. That will be the word of the day. I will post the word of the day and use it in a couple of sentences.
Today's word is efficacious. Meaning, being capable of producing the desired effect. As in: Our congressmen do not seem to be efficacious in dealing with our budget and deficit matters!
Day 12
July 12, 2011
Good day, but not for the project. Up at 7 due to hangover caused by 1, yes 1 drink. 1 green apple Joose! I am seriously considering hopping on the wagon for the duration of this project. Work was frustrating but tolerable. As soon as I came home I had to dismantle our main ac unit, flip it on it's side and blow it out with the compressor. It was leaking condensation into our dining room due to a drain hole being plugged with junk. Once cleaned out I reinstalled it and went straight to work on the tub project and put up and caulked the last trim piece. All that is left is to reinstall the shower head and the curtain rod. It's 10:30 pm now so I won’t have time for a workout or studying tonight.
Today's word is paramour. A paramour is a lover in an illicit or adulterous affair. As in: Bill Clinton's secret service agents were not efficacious enough to keep his paramour hidden from the media.
Today's random question. What do you you believe is on the dark side of the moon?
Oh! Isn't this common knowledge? On the dark side of the moon there lives a race of creatures know as Cantseemems atallums. They are curious little creatures who's existence is only known about through the overly dramatic interpretations of astronaut dreams. They have two eyes, a nose, a mouth, two ears, hair, two arms, two legs, ten fingers and ten toes, walk upright and are a lot like humans except for the fact that they look nothing like us. They can pick up American television although only 3 channels, Fox News, CNN and C-SPAN. They tried to learn our language from this but failed miserably as they could not mimic the humans ability to talk through their asses. They use to get around on foot until they happened across a funny little car that someone left in the middle of nowhere. They go about there lives much like we do but they only eat, eating moon pies. Some of there hobbies include bathing in moonlight Growing moon flowers, watching the Moon Over Parador and Moonstruck, drinking moonshine, cconceiving moon children and the tango. There are of course invisible to the naked eye. But who walks around with naked eyes any way. That's indecent. Try throwing a shirt and pants, or for god sakes at least some underwear on you eyes and you will see that these little devils are everywhere on the moon. Just ask any astronaut that has actually been there. Humor aside, I'm sure there's plenty of nice moon rock on the dark side of the moon.
Day 13
July 13, 2011
Today was good. Up at 6:30am and Zoie took another math test. She did very well although she took her time and made me late for work. Work was an adventure in ridiculousness. Came home and started my workout. Ran my first 3 mile warm up in a while and it felt good! Went straight into the weights and did my normal sets. When I went to do my situps though, I found that one of our dogs left me a a motivational gift right next to where my head comes down. I worked hard right to the end and found the limit again. Arms and back shaking. Right to the edge of the envelope, right where I want to be. Going to read from Wiring Simplified which is a guide for making sense of the electrical code, for an hour or so tonight.
Word of the day is recalcitrant. Recalcitrant means a stubborn resistance to authority or guidance.
As in: It should be expected that corporations would take recalcitrant attitudes towards regulation.
Today’s random question: If your best friend was cheating on their spouse, would you say anything?
Hmmm. Depends, whether or not they have kids. I am a bit of a libertarian in my belief that it's not my place to tell other people how to be moral. If there are no kids between them then I would not say anything to the spouse, but I would make a point of telling my friend that I would never do what they are doing. If there are kids involved then my friend is hurting his or her kids in ways I will not get into here. I would not tell the spouse directly but I would arrange for the spouse to be in the right place at the right time to see what he or she needed to see.
Day 14
July 14, 2011
Up at 6 am. Had Zoie complete 2 math assignments and then it was off to work. Absolutely nothing memorable happened at work today. Back home I had to finish a couple of projects in preparation for our house guests this weekend. Took a quick 2 mile run and showered off.
The word of the day is elide. To elide is to omit, or to slur over a syllable of a word. As in: The general idea of Ebonics is to elide over syllables in words that are inefficient to pronounce.
Today's random question is: Paper or plastic?
Hmm... Are we talking grocery bags or currency? If we are talking grocery bags than plastic. Far less energy is wasted producing and distributing plastic bag to paper and plastic bags can now be recycled. If we are talking currency, than I say paper. I am a plastic hater. I do have a debit card but I do not and will not own any credit cards. When you pay for something with a credit card not only are you locking yourself into paying more that the product is worth but you are also cheating the retailer that you are buying it from out of 2-3% of profit. Many retailers are just raising their prices and passing the credit costs on to you to maintain their profit margins. In a time when our economy is growing by less than 1% a year, we could pump about 2% more into it by just buying everything with cash. This is of course ignoring the basic fact that the credit card companies are more profitable when you are slow paying and maintain large balances. In short the credit card companies want to profit off both the consumer and the retailer, and actively try to maximize the profit from the consumer by doing their best by keeping you in debt. Cash is still king.
Day 15
July 15, 2011
I'm taking a day off today from project. We have some friends in coming from out of town to stay the weekend with us and I will not have time to do anything till tomorrow. This week has not left me much time to progress but I promise next week I will have more time and it will be different.
Day 16
July 16, 2011
Up at 7am. Lazy day. Had a french toast breakfast with the fam and our friends. Had to do a grocery run and spent the afternoon continuing to pick up oak branches from the half an oak tree that fell in our yard a couple weeks ago. Did a 4 mile warm up run for my workout. Felt good! Feels great to be hitting the distance again. Had some company in the Sunfire gym today. My friend Ricky from Virginia pumped some iron with me and showed me a couple of lifts they're doing up north now. One kicked my butt. It involved holding a short bar with a cord and a 10lbs plate attached to it straight out from your body and rolling the bar and the cord with the weight up and down. This is tough and lights up your forearms fast! Otherwise I lifted my normal sets. Felt good.
Today’s word for the day is pillory. A pillory is a piece of wood with holes cut in it designed to hold a person captive by their hands and head. I think this is what I would call a 'stock'. As in: I believe any impeached president should be locked in a pillory and be the target of rotten tomato projectiles.
Today’s random question is: Who is someone who you think history has forgotten?
Easy one. Eratosthenes. Eratosthenes, using light, discovered the Earth was round 200+ years before Christ and even devised a method using shadows to estimate the Earth's diameter. His figure was amazingly accurate. Eatosthenes and the intellectual word knew the Earth was round and even had an idea of who large it was over 1500 years before Christopher Columbus was born. Eratosthenes was just one man in a collection of intelligent men AND women who built and maintained the library of Alexandria. Who knows how much the world really new before it was destroyed. History has done it's best to forget the library and in my mind, Eratosthenes, the first man to prove the Earth is round.

Week 2
Week 2
Day 5
July 5, 2011
Zoie stayed at a friends house last night so no math this morning. Did my 2 mile warm up run, got called an asshole by one of the neighbors, then started my weight lifting. I had to quit early because my right side of my chest and shoulder were cramping on me. Yesterday was the 4th of July and I didn't get home till late from the festivities. Didn't get much sleep last night so no studying tonight, going to bed early. 10 mgs of melatonin is just what the doctor ordered.
Day 6
July 6, 2011
Knocked myself with melatonin last night so no math this morning. Busted my ass at work, but still came home and went with the wifey and Miss Jenni to the gym. Did 3 miles on the treadmill and 1/4mile in the pool. The bikes were all occupied and I'm still nursing some seriously sore calves so I skipped the bike tonight. Came home and had to get right on fixing one of our AC units. Something is plugging the it's drainage and it leaked condensation water all over last night and ruined at least one sheet of drywall in our dinning room. Always something...
Day 7
July 7, 2011
Up at 6 am this morning. Went over Zoie's math work for the day and then off to work. Came home went over Zoie's completed math work and started my workout. Rain meant no warm up run so I did a light round of combo lifts to get the blood pumping. Other wise my normal routine. I did add some shoulder raises with 10lbs each arm into my arm sets. Those mixed with the dumbbell presses give me a good pump on my shoulders. Mixed my protein drink, showered up and went to start studying. I figured I would start my language studying but when I tried logging on to Rosetta stone our company account had expired. Oh well, should have used it sooner. Now they give you the option of buying the courses on cds. I think I'll go that route. Spent the rest of my time figuring out how to take stills from our video camera and exploring the controls on my blog. Not the most productive study session but I made the best of it.
Day 8
July 8, 2011
Up at 6 am. Did some algebra and inequality review with Zoie and then off to work. After work it was off to the gym. Did 3 miles on the treadmill at an 8 min/mile pace and about half a mile in the pool to make up for the fact that I still don't trust my legs on the bike yet. In the pool I had my first successful night with the TI or 'total imersion' stroke. It focuses on maximum distance to minimum number of strokes. If you swim distance, check it out. Instead of studying tonight I had to help inseminate my wife's horse. I was the official 'giant suringe full of semen' holder. Next year, as part of this project I will talk her into letting attempt inseminating a mare myself. That will be a learning experience.
Day 9
July 9, 2011
Today sucked! Woke up at 7:30 am and got Zoie going on a math test. She was not putting out much effort and needed a couple boots to the rear end. Spent the rest of the day battling the new tub in Zoie's bathroom. At one point I dropped the tub in place for a test fit and found the drain pipe was off by about 2 inches from the drain hole in the tub. No problem, I just need a few pvc fittings and my saw and I'll move the pipe right over. So I jumped in the car and about half an hour later I was back from the hardware store with the necessary parts. I measured, prepped my parts and cut the pipe. I reach for my glue and... crap it was all dried up. I was just at the hardware store! That's ok I have more, somewhere. Now anytime you cut a drain pipe past the trap you remove the vapor lock that keeps your house from filling with the wonderful smells of your septic tank. So I spend at least an hour looking for glue that didn't exist, as my house started to stink worse and worse. Hours Later the tub was finally in and ready for trim.
Day 10
July 10, 2011
Ah! Much better. Woke at 7:30 am and got Zoie going on another math test. She did much better. No boots necessary. Worked on the tub all day cut, fit and caulked all the trim. Cutting and hanging went well but I am no artist with the caulk gun. I guess it just has to be waterproof right? Anyone reading this who takes a shower in my house, do me a favor and don't laugh at my caulk job...seriously. Installed the new faucet and chased the shower head connection behind the drywall for a while. Decided that this failure was a good stopping point for the day. Did my weight workout with a 2 mile warm up run and no changes to the usual routine. I did however manage to run all the way to Reddick and back without being called an asshole.
I'm going to add a little segment to my daily post here called the random question. Not an original idea, I know, but I like it and it makes me think. If there are random questions you want me to answer, send me a message, email or facebook it to me.
Today’s random question was generated by my wife. If you could bring someone who died before their time back to life, who would it be?
I had to think for a while, but my answer is Buddy Holly. I think that Buddy Holly, in the mere year and a half that he enjoyed in the music industry before his untimely death, left a mark on everyone who has heard his music especially the other musicians of his day and those to come for decades. The list of major artist who consider Holly an inspiration may as well read as a list of Grammy nominees for the last 50 years. In his brief career he gave the new born child of rock and roll direction and real substance when most other artists where just out there having fun with it. Imagine the new sounds and lyrics that Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones and even Zeppelin could have been influenced by if he had not gotten on that plane. He was also pursuing a career in acting before his death. Definitely my choice. The founding father of powerful and honest rock and roll. Rock and Roll that could fuel and change generations.
“Thank God for Buddy Holly!” - Brian May of Queen
On one last note. My wife is dragging her heels on take my status photos. Everybody send her messages and tell her to get on with it already.

Week 1
Week 1
Day 1 July 1, 2011
Up at 5:30am worked on inequalities with Zoie. Off to work at 7am. Had to cheat on diet a little. Had 4th of July Party at work with hotdogs, chips, soda and cake. Didn't want to be the asshole at the company party eating healthy food and glaring at everyone else. After work, ran a few errands, came home and started my first days workout. Warmed up with a 2 mile run from my house to downtown Reddick and back. Stretched and started my combo lift sets. I do a set of squats with 20lbs on a 40lbs bar, crossing situps holding a 10 lbs plate, Stiff leg deadlifts with 40lbs, calf extensions with 10lbs, leg curls with 15lbs each leg and power clean and jerks with 40lbs. Each is done to failure. Next on to isolation lifts all 3 sets each till failure. Started with chest flys with 20lbs each arm and then right into dumbbell press same weight, lat pulls... not sure how much weight I'm using there, shrugs with 25lbs each arm, bent dumbbell rows at 22.5 pounds each arm, then into 3 power sets of dumbbell presses, bicep curls and tricep extensions. About this time I'm dripping in sweat and ready to pass out. I stagger inside and mix up a shake with 26g of whey based protein in a about 12oz of vitamin c rich Wallmart 'early rise'. Doesn't taste horrible. Vitamin c is almost as important as protein in building muscle as it is vital for cell and tissue repair that is inherent to muscle fatiguing. I used to use a soy based protein powder but I really got no gain from it and found out that soy has a lot of estrogen in it (not good for building and conditioning muscle). Now I relax and type my account of the day. I should also mention I should be doing a 3 mile warm up run but I have been pushing my legs hard recently and have the good sense to back of when I feel pain now. Last year I pushed my legs hard and even tried to run trough leg pain and wound up partially tearing one calf muscle and straining an Achilles tendon in the other leg which took the better part of a year to stop hurting. My advice, listen to the pain, it's telling you what is about to fail. Take a break from what hurts and work something else.
Day 2 July 2, 2011
Up at 5:30 am, taught Zoie how to solve inequalities. Ran errands and got hay. Mowed on the farm and soon to be nursery most of the day. Earned a good sunburn. No workout today. I think I will make Saturday my official rest day. Left shoulder is sore and legs are complaining. Worked on spare bathroom renovation. I have gently (with a sawzall) removed the old tub and tile board and faucet. Tomorrow I will be cutting and hanging the new tile board and if there is time dropping in the new tub. I was hoping to post weekly pictures of physical progress but unfortunately someone who will remain anonymous lost our digital camera so I will have to wait till it's replaced. Going to curl up on couch and watch a movie with the lady of the house now. Will post again tomorrow.

Goals
So How Is This Thing Going To Work?
For the next five and a half years I'm going to work my mind and body to their limits. I do not want to set short term goals for fear of limiting the potential for having fun figuring out how to accomplish what I'm after. I will however, set my long term goals
.Long Term Mind Goals:
1) I will learn two languages
2) I will study and be tested on college level text books in Physics, Chemistry and Calculus
3) I will read at least one book on philosophy every two months
For my mind I will be studying or reading at least an hour a day. I will have to nail down some sort of testing system for the textbooks. I will also post a list of the philosophy books I read. Competency in the languages will have to be assessed too. I'll work on those and post when I have it figured out.
Long Term Body Goals:
1) I will train for, qualify for, and complete an Ironman triathlon.
For the physical half I will be doing a six day a week work out. Three days of hardcore weight training, three days of intense cardio and one day of rest. I will do my best to describe the details of my workout and diet throughout the project as well as post weekly progress pictures.
Synergy:
Here's where the fun is. What good would growing your mind and body be if you didn't use them? So I want to use my mind and body in every way I can along the way. I am a busy guy, but I want to try do something different every weekend. From simple things like learning to juggle or solving a 4x4 rubik's cube to complex stuff like remodeling my house and completely rebuilding a car. I also want to take this growth and pour it into my career as well. There are certifications and licenses I can obtain that will take me further in the market place. As I grow, so should my abilities and experiences. The synergy is really the whole point to this project.
Can I really do all this?
I have chosen these goals knowing that with the right motivation, time management and a little support from family and friends I can achieve all of them. Part of me says that to really push my mind and body, I would have to also set unattainable goals. I believe that would hurt the inspirational idea that everything I accomplish here can be done by anyone. I have set goals that I know are possible and that I just need to organize and execute a plan in order to achieve.
What happens at the end?
As I go I want to compile a list of accomplishments and failures for one last post. I will reflect on what went right, what went wrong and what I could have done better. I hope everyone stays with me till the end, my 40th birthday. I'll have to throw a party and get everyone's opinion on what to do with the next five years after that.
FYI! Keep in mind that this all being done in addition to a 45hr/wk job, teaching my daughter math for her home schooling and the normal duties of a 'Horse Husband' on a a horse farm. Wish me luck!
